SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans dash past Carroll Kuemper at Merchants Park
CARROLL — The West Marshall baseball team scored 10 unanswered runs to dash past Carroll Kuemper for a 13-3, six inning victory in Thursday’s non-conference clash at Merchants Park.
The two teams were tied at 3-all after three innings before the visiting Trojans (13-6) scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and seven times in the sixth.
Beckham DeSotel went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs to lead the West Marshall bats. DJ Ridout was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs, while leadoff batter AJ Dee was hit by the pitch three times and scored thrice as well.
Kuemper pitchers issued seven walks and seven hit-by-pitches in the loss for the Knights (9-8).
Karver Christensen pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief for the win, walking one, hitting two batters while striking out four for the win. Hunter Polley pitched 2 2/3 innings for the no decision.
No. 9 Spartan baseball team nears NICL West crown
ELDORA — The Class 2A No. 9 Grundy Center baseball team moved to within one win of clinching at least a share of the NICL West Division title by beating South Hardin 10-1 on Thursday night.
The Spartans (14-2, 8-0) collected their fifth win in a row thanks to consistent offensive pressure, scoring in four of their seven at-bats. Grundy Center got five runs in the top of the first inning and cruised from there.
Judd Jirovsky allowed only two hits over six shutout innings, striking out nine, and Britt Meyer allowed a homer to Preston Dolash while getting the final three outs.
Jirovsky, Brody Zinkula and Pete Lebo had three hits apiece to lead the Spartan bats, including two doubles for Lebo. Ryker Thoren was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to help hold off South Hardin (12-6, 5-3).
Farrington homers as Mustangs take down Rebels
GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team jumped all over Gladbrook-Reinbeck and finished off the Rebels for an 11-4 win in Thursday’s NICL West Division contest.
Jake Farrington homered and Blake Neuroth had three hits to lead the Mustangs (7-10, 4-5) to their third-straight win. Farrington scored twice and drive in two runs, while Neuroth was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Eli Burns was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.
Jace Johnson pitched four innings for the win, allowing two runs — one earned — on four hits and a hit batter. He struck out two. Farrington allowed two runs in his three innings of relief, walking a total of four while striking out four.
No statistics were available at press time for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (6-12, 0-4).
15-run inning propels East Marshall softball to victory
NEVADA — The Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball team scored 15 runs in the first inning of its eventual 19-0 romp over non-conference foe Nevada on Thursday night.
Ashtyn Wheater and Makayla Hala both homered as part of the Mustangs’ monstrous first at-bat. East Marshall (13-6) sent 19 batters to the plate in the top of the first, collecting eight hits and six walks while benefiting from one error by Nevada (2-12).
Wheater’s three-run homer made it 10-0 Mustangs with two outs in the inning, and Hala’s first career home run — a two-run shot — brought the tally to 15-0.
Peyton Grabenbauer made the lead stand up easily, allowing just three hits while striking out six for the four-inning triumph.
Wheater finished 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs, while Grabenbauer and Bailey Grant had two hits apiece, including a double for both. Vaeda Bryan and Libby Atcher both singled, scored twice and drove in three runs. Addy Cole added a pinch-hit double, scoring the team’s final run.
West Marshall softball tripped up by Rams
JEFFERSON — The West Marshall softball team had its three-game win streak snapped by a 5-4 loss at Greene County on Thursday night in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
The host Rams (7-9, 6-6) got out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and withstood West Marshall (12-7, 9-4) the rest of the way.
Aubree Greenwood pitched four shutout innings of relief to help the Trojans hang around, but the bats couldn’t complete the rally. West Marshall scored twice in the fourth and once in the sixth, but came up one run short.
The Trojans had five singles — one each for Lily Zahnd, Lillian Fischer, Olivia Randall, Greenwood and Nelle Kemmerer. Greenwood allowed four hits and struck out four in relief of Taylor Thomas, who surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and one walk. She struck out one.
Spartan softball slams South Hardin in six innings
ELDORA — The Grundy Center softball team moved to within one win of a share of the NICL West Division title by taking down South Hardin 11-0 in six innings here Thursday night.
Macey Kiewiet pitched a three-hit shutout, walking two batters while striking out 11 for the win.
The Spartans (12-6, 6-1) supported her with 15 hits, led by Ava Heeren. The sophomore right fielder went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a run and five RBIs. Lauren Zajac was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Camdyn Aronson went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and four runs scored.
Charlee Rosonke had two hits, including a double, to lead South Hardin (2-16, 0-8).
Homers help Mustangs put away Pirates, 11-3
HUDSON — Ashtyn Wheater and Miyah Grabenbauer both homered and the East Marshall softball team stomped Hudson 11-3 on Wednesday night.
The host Pirates (11-6) grabbed a 3-0 lead after their first at-bat, but the Mustangs (12-6) scored in each of five at-bats to take the win.
Libby Atcher finished 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring once and driving in two runs to lead the Mustangs. Grabenbauer followed a leadoff walk to Gianna Boswell with her first varsity home run to make it 3-2 Hudson, and Wheater’s three-run shot in the second gave the Mustangs the lead for good, 7-3.
Boswell was 2-for-2 with a two-run triple, and Grabenbauer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Peyton Grabenbauer got the win in the circle for East Marshall, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three.
