WATERLOO — The Grundy Center boys’ golf program has four state titles to its name, and East Marshall finally has its first state meet berth.

The Spartans and Mustangs both advanced through the Class 2A District 4 tournament on Monday at South Hills Golf Course, finishing behind Waterloo Columbus but ahead of the rest of the field to reach next week’s state meet.

They’ll be joined by West Marshall junior Hunter Polley, who qualified as one of two at-large individual golfers by finishing third to reach state for the second year in a row.

It represents East Marshall’s first state golf appearance since LDF’s trip to state in 1988.

Waterloo Columbus carded a 319 to take Monday’s team title, followed by Grundy Center (323) and East Marshall (328). MFL MarMac was fourth at 332, and Roland-Story (340) was in the middle of the nine-team standings.

“We weren’t really sure how it was going to end up,” said East Marshall head coach Jordan Augspurger. “We came in as the third seed and we were paired with Waterloo Columbus and Grundy Center. They’re familiar faces.

“We didn’t think we were going to have a chance to be in it, but we just told the boys to grind through and stick with it. I’m really proud of the boys for keeping it together because it wasn’t very nice conditions. Even when they got down on themselves they did a great job of battling back.”

Spartan junior Judd Jirovsky claimed medalist honors after a two-hole, sudden-death playoff with East Marshall junior Cody Weaver. Both golfers shot 5-over-par 77 to share the lowest score on a windy day in Waterloo.

Polley tied for third at 78 with Grundy Center’s Preston Martens and Max Schuchmann of Waterloo Columbus. Oelwein’s Ethan Anderson and Brandon Tournier tied for the second at-large spot for state with rounds of 79.

The rest of the Spartans’ team score came from Eli Wegmann, Jaxon Kiewiet and Jalen Kirkpatrick, each of whom shot 84. Alex Kiewiet added a 95.

East Marshall got an 81 from both Rylan Weaver and Jackson Bidwell, and Wyatt Stalzer posted an 89. Austin Crandon (95) and Gage Searle (99) also competed for the Mustangs.

“All four of the top teams in the NICL (North Iowa Cedar League) qualified as a team,” Augspurger said, adding Aplington-Parkersburg from another district. “Just playing in the conference we are, it’s competitive every night and good experience playing against good teams.”

Grundy Center finished third at state a year ago after the second day at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames was washed out by rain. The Spartans won the title in 2023 behind Jirovsky’s individual medalist.

Cody Weaver came away with third place, Polley was fourth, while Jirovsky and Martens tied for fifth at least year’s state meet.

Starting at $4.38/week.
