Rebels, Comets come up short of state

MASON CITY — The BCLUW and Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ golf teams were unable to find their way through Monday’s Class 1A district meet at Highland Park Golf Course, ending their season one step away from state.
The Rebels racked up fifth place for the day with their 345 team total, while BCLUW was sixth with a 354.
South Winneshiek (319), South Hamilton (335) and West Fork (340) advanced to state as the top three finishers, followed closely by Starmont (342) and G-R in the 12-team tournament.
Brayden Utter led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with an 85, while Anthony Knaack came in with an 86. Austen Mathern and Michael Boyd both shot 87 to account for the final counting scores. Chad Gutknecht (91) and Cole Fleshner (97) also competed for the Rebels.
Nate Bishop tied for ninth place to lead BCLUW with a round of 83. Adam Frank finished with an 86, Carter McCready carded a 91, while both Beau Towne and Maverick Grafke shot 94 for the final counting round. Aiden Frank added a 98 for the Comets.
Individual state qualifiers from the district were Nick Bernhard of Turkey Valley (81), Ari Behnke of Wapsie Valley (82), and Sawyer Schlee of Starmont (82).
