SPORTS SHORTS: Nunn notches lifetime best to lead Bobcat boys
WAUKEE — Marshalltown junior Carter Nunn charted a lifetime best in the 3,200-meter run to finish in second place, leading the Bobcat boys’ track and field team at the Waukee Northwest Relays on Thursday night.
Nunn clocked in at 10 minutes, 6.9 seconds, to score the silver behind Urbandale senior Blake Smith (9:55.09).
Marshalltown’s distance medley relay team of Fernando Garcia, Evan Anderson, Kieron Sharp and John Moellers took third place with a season-best time of 3:47.68.
The Bobcats added a sixth-place finish from the 4×400 quartet of Sharp, Aiden Smitherman, Moellers and Isacc Ceniceros (3:39.79). The sprint medley relay (Anderson, LaMar Johnson, Smitherman, Ceniceros; 1:41.47) and the 4×100 (Garcia, Johnson, Jayden Lavender, Anderson; 45.51) both finished in seventh, as did Owen Eaton in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 45 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Smitherman scored a personal record in the 400 with a 53.97.
Christensen captains Bobcat girls at Mason City
MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team finished last out of eight teams at the Riverhawk Invitational on Thursday night.
The Bobcats totaled 54 points in the meet, just seven points behind Waterloo West (61) in seventh. Ankeny Centennial won the invite with 231 points.
MHS was led by freshman Grace Christensen, who finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.12 seconds. She was also fifth in the 200 in 28.08, followed by Niah Lott in sixth place with a season-best time of 28.22. The Bobcats’ 4×800 relay team of Millie Heitmann, Drea Ceren, Mallory Meyeraan and Elyza Ceren scored fourth in 11:26.80.
Anessa Morrison took fifth in the 800 with a season-best time of 2:44.05, while Drea Ceren ran the team’s best 1,500 of the spring to place sixth in 5:31.80. The distance medley quartet of Shailynn Sadie, Elliana Rottink, Emerson Mason and Makenzie O’Shea earned sixth (5:30.91), and Lott took seventh in the long jump (15 feet, 2 1/4 inches).
Mustang girls claim West Marshall Invite title
STATE CENTER — The East Marshall girls’ track and field team took first place at the West Marshall Co-Ed Invite on Thursday, scoring 139.5 points to win the eight-team meet.
The Mustangs won five events to hold off West Marshall and Lynnville-Sully, who tied for second place with 124 points. Meskwaki was eighth with 23 points.
Sydney Hull scored two event victories for East Marshall, taking the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 29.48 seconds, and the 1,500 in a season-best 5:15.58. Mallory Ostroksi was second in the 800 in a season-best 2:37.17.
Ashtyn Wheater also won twice on the field, taking the shot put at 35 feet, 9 inches, and the discus at 89-6. Marvea Harvey was third in the discus at 85-5.
The Mustangs also won the 4×100 relay, as Cora Talbert, Makayla Hala, Vaeda Bryan and Marisa Cahalan clocked a season-best 54.25.
West Marshall’s Kylee Schuler won two events to lead the Trojans. She claimed the 100 in a season-best time of 13.38, and she also won the high jump by clearing 5-4.
Addie Thompson added a second-place finish in the 3,000 with a time of 11:45.90. Amelia Ranson was third in both the 200 (28.96) and the 100 hurdles (17.75).
Dorothy Bear led Meskwaki with a second-place finish in the 400 (1:05.23) and the 400 hurdles (1:14.42), and Nahliya Pushetonequa was fourth in the 100 with a season-best 14.52.
Spartan golfers capture medals at Meadowbrook
WELLSBURG — The Grundy Center boys’ golf team tallied the five lowest scores to win an NICL West Division triangular on Thursday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
The Spartans shot a 143 team total to top Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s 175. Host AGWSR did not field a complete team.
Preston Martens shot a 1-under-par 34 to pace Grundy Center as meed medalist, while Jaxon Kiewiet and Judd Jirovsky finished at even-par. Eli Wegmann’s 39 closed out the team scoring.
Austen Mathern paced G-R with a round of 41, followed by Michael Boyd (43), Chad Gutknecht (45) and Anthony Knaack (46).
