SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans, Mustangs and Polley push through
STORY CITY — The Grundy Center and East Marshall boys’ golf teams as well as one West Marshall individual advanced out of the Class 2A sectional meet at River Bend Golf Course on Wednesday.
Grundy Center captured the team title with a blistering 296 team total, while East Marshall shot a 317 for second place. Host Roland-Story qualified as the third-place team at 324. West Marshall came in seventh out of eight teams with a 361.
Spartan junior Judd Jirovsky scorched the course for a 4-under-par 68 to claim medalist honors, carding three birdies, an eagle and a bogey during the day. Preston Martens also had an eagle on his scorecard, finishing with two birdies and two bogeys for a 2-under 70 as the runner-up medalist.
Jalen Kirkpatrick tied for fourth with his round of 77, and Eli Wegmann added an 81 for Grundy Center.
East Marshall’s runner-up finish was captained by junior Cody Weaver, who carded a 73 for third place. Rylan Weaver shot 78, Wyatt Stalzer an 82 and Jackson Bidwell 84 to get the Mustangs into the next round.
West Marshall’s Hunter Polley pushed through to districts with a 77, tying for fourth, and Dike-New Hartford’s Lewis Textor and Carson Costello also qualified individually after shooting 78.
The Trojans’ team score included an 88 from James Decker, a 94 from Isaac Anderson and 102s from Yuk Yin Wong and Connor Kemmerer.
The Spartans, Mustangs and Polley play in Monday’s district meet at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike.
Bobcat girls soccer settles for tie at Ottumwa
OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team led 2-0 but settled for a 2-2 tie against host Ottumwa on Tuesday night.
McKenna Coleman scored both goals for the Bobcats (10-3-3), who haven’t lost in their last nine matches (6-0-3). Sophie Valdez Chavez had four saves in net for MHS, which outshot the Bulldogs 22-8.
Marshalltown closes the regular season at home Friday, hosting Waterloo Columbus at 5:30 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.
BCLUW girls golf collects conference crown
TRIPOLI — Leah McEwen claimed medalist honors and the BCLUW girls’ golf team won the Iowa Star Conference title on Monday at Maple Hills Country Club.
The Comets shot 404 to claim a cozy 19-stroke cushion over runner-up North Tama and third-place Don Bosco, which tied with matching team scores of 423. The Redhawks claimed second over the Dons due to the fifth-score tiebreaker.
McEwen shot a 95 to win the meet medalist honors, followed by Waterloo Christian’s Ava Rice (97) and North Tama’s Kylie Calderwood (98).
BCLUW had three players tie for fifth place as Delaney Legg, Gracie Andrews and Marissa Schnathorst each shot 103 to round out the Comets’ team score.
Calderwood was supported by Kensington Pick with a 104, Briar Blake’s 109, and 112s for both Danika Wrage and Brooke Bradley.
Violet Jackson shot a 133 to lead GMG, which only had three golfers participate. Rhianna Murty added a 145 and Kenzie Bartel shot 147.
