The Marshalltown baseball team managed just one hit in each game of Friday’s Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader with Mason City, falling 6-0 and 14-0.
Mason City pitcher Gabe Ries struck out 14 in a one-hit shutout in the opener, giving up a leadoff double to Sam Greazel and nothing more the rest of the way. Ries struck out nine-straight Bobcats at one point.
Lincoln Berding was 3-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs, and Marquez Holton hit a solo homer for the Riverhawks. Aiden Holmgren pitched five innings for the loss for MHS, allowing four runs on five hits, one walk and one hit batsman. He struck out three.
“Holmgren pitched well in Game 1,” said Marshalltown head coach Colton Hanke. “He kept it around the zone and we played very well defensively. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a run across the plate in Game 1 or Game 2 for that to matter.”
In the nightcap, Zander Stupp’s single in the fourth inning was Marshalltown’s only hit. Owen Rickers struck out five over four shutout innings, while Gaige Younge gave up no hits in three innings of relief, striking out four.
Isaac Rickers was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Riverhawks (12-6, 5-3), who have won 10 in a row. MHS starter Sam Greazel surrendered five runs on six hits in one inning for the loss.
