SPORTS SHORTS: Grant homers, Mustangs maul Wolverines 11-0
LE GRAND — The Class 2A No. 8 East Marshall softball team bounced back from its first loss in convincing fashion, smashing Dike-New Hartford 11-0 in four innings here Thursday night.
Mustang junior pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer walked the game’s first batter Hannah Steffen before retiring the next 12 straight Wolverines, including seven by strikeout.
East Marshall senior Bailey Grant hit a two-run home run to cap her team’s eight-run second inning. The Mustangs led 2-0 before leading off the second with five straight singles, starting with Grant. Giana Boswell and Ashtyn Wheater both had two-run singles before Grant’s round-tripper in her second at-bat of the inning.
Miyah Grabenbauer added an RBI double for the Mustangs’ final run in the third inning. Grabenbauer, Boswell and Grant each had two of their team’s 10 hits.
No. 11 Spartans pull away from GMG softball
GREEN MOUNTAIN — Class 1A No. 11 Collins-Maxwell broke open a close game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the GMG softball team 5-2 on Wednesday night.
The Spartans (5-0, 5-0) led 2-1 before scoring three times in the seventh, but GMG (3-2, 3-2) countered with a run in the home half.
GMG freshman pitcher Riah Boege allowed just one earned run on four hits and four walks while striking out 11. Collins-Maxwell sophomore Jayden Peters allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk, striking out nine.
Skyler Murty hit two doubles and scored a run for GMG. Tatum Jones singled and scored, and Taelyn Sash had a hit in the Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.
West Marshall overtakes Roland-Story late
ROLAND — The West Marshall softball team scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 2-1 victory over Roland-Story in Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
Jillian Karsjens hit a two-run single in the seventh for West Marshall (5-3, 3-1), driving home Lily Zahnd and courtesy runner Savanna Davenport. Zahnd had two of West Marshall’s four hits in the win. Aubree Greenwood allowed one run on six hits and two walks, striking out nine for the win over Roland-Story (3-2, 2-2).
Trojans hand Norsemen two HOIAC defeats
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team swept a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader from Roland-Story (7-4, 2-2), toppling the Norsemen 6-1 and 4-1 on Wednesday night.
Noah DeSotel pitched a four-hitter in the first game for the host Trojans (6-5, 4-2), scattering four hits and one walk against six strikeouts for the win.
AJ Dee, DJ Ridout and Beckham DeSotel had two hits apiece, Vincent Clawson had a two-run single and Caden Pfantz hit a double for the West Marshall offense.
Beckham DeSotel pitched five innings for the win in the nightcap, overcoming six walks and three hits allowed by striking out six. Clawson struck out three in two perfect innings of relief.
Pfantz finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Holden Simms was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Trojan bats. Dawson Bear drove in a run and scored as well.
Teske’s one-hitter helps GMG baseball get first win
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team earned its first win of the season, shutting out Collins-Maxwell 3-0 in Wednesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.
Ethan Klemesrud was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Wolverines (1-5, 1-4), who totaled eight hits. Colin Teske and Grady Dieleman both hit a double, and Rider Kupka singled and scored.
Teske pitched a one-hitter for the win, striking out seven in seven scoreless innings of work. He didn’t walk a batter and faced the minimum 21 Spartan batters.
2025 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Class Announced
IOWA CITY — The Iowa Letterwinners Club and the University of Iowa Athletics Department announced its 2025 Hall of Fame Class on Thursday.
The 36th Hall of Fame class includes Justin Austin (men’s track and field), Lisa Birocci Banse (softball), Bob Bowlsby (administration), Elena Callas King (women’s golf), Lisa Cellucci (field hockey), Brandon Scherff (football), Brad Smith (men’s wrestling) and Tom Williams (men’s swimming and diving).
The eight-person class will be inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Aug. 29 — the evening prior to the Iowa football team’s season opener against Albany.
The induction ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held in the Feller Club Room at Carver-Hawkeye Arena with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony will follow at 6:30 p.m. Cost for the evening is $25 and includes heavy appetizers and a cash bar will be available.
