ISU’s Burkle, Barrett on watch lists

AMES — Iowa State tight end Gabe Burkle and offensive lineman Dylan Barrett have both been named to college football award watch lists.

Burkle, a Cedar Rapids native, was named to the 2025 John Mackey Award watch list Friday. The award is presented annually to the best tight end in college football.

Burkle was one of six Big 12 tight ends featured on the 46-player watch list.

Burkle took on an increased role within the Cyclone offense and emerged as a viable pass-catching option in the last half of last season. Burkle played in all 14 games, making eight starts, and hauled in 26 receptions for 296 yards.

Of his 26 receptions, 24 came in the final seven games of the year.

Burkle was part of several key plays throughout the season, but perhaps none bigger than his 26-yard reception via halfback pass on third-and-1 to set up the game-winning score at Utah. He also caught his first-career touchdown in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against No. 15 Miami.

Barrett was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in Division I college football.

Barrett, entering his second season at ISU, started eight games at left guard and missed six games due to injury last season.

He helped pave the way for an ISU rushing attack that scored 27 touchdowns, tied for the fourth-most in a season in school history. Iowa State also broke the program record for points in a season (435).

Starting at $4.38/week.
