Johnson 3rd, Nunn 9th in Central super-meet

PELLA — The Marshalltown boys’ cross country team came away with 14th place at the star-studded Heartland Classic on Saturday at Central College, led by a pair of top-10 finishes.

MHS junior Preston Johnson picked up the bronze with a time of 15 minutes, 17.9 seconds, trailing only Western Dubuque senior Quentin Nauman (15:01.1) and Pella senior Canaan Dunham (15:11.5). Nauman, an Oregon commit, was the first prep in Iowa high school track history to break the four-minute mark in the 1,600-meter run. Nauman and Dunham finished 1-2 in last year’s Class 3A state cross country meet.

Marshalltown senior Carter Nunn came away in ninth place with a time of 16:08.2.

MHS senior Isacc Ceniceros returned to action to finish third on the team with a time of 18:19.3, coming in 130th. Freshman Costin Piscitelli took 133rd in 18:21.8, and senior Myles Goldman was 139th in 18:41.7.

Thomas Stanley rounded out Marshalltown’s scoring effort in 147th place in 19:04.3. Fellow sophomore Michael Downs was 150th in 19:10.9, and senior Kade Randall came in 157th in 19:25.0.

The Bobcats’ scoring total of 370 was behind Ankeny (327) and ahead of Des Moines Christian (430) for 14th in the 25-team invitational. Cedar Rapids Prairie won with 87 points, ahead of Dallas Center Grimes (102) and Waukee Northwest (118).

On the girls’ side, Marshalltown was the last of 18 scoring teams with 529 points. Waukee Northwest claimed first place with 44 points, followed by Iowa City High (74) and Waukee (153).

Bobcat senior Anessa Morrison was the first of her team to the finish line, placing 108th in 22:33.6. Mallory Meyeraan was 115th in 22:54.6, and Lily Johnson was 124th in 23:23.7.

Airi Hoven and Sophia Valdez finished consecutively to round out the team’s scoring runs, placing 146th and 147th with respective times of 26:27.8 and 26:45.1.

Maquoketa senior Izzy Hardin won the girls’ race with a time of 18:32.8, while Waukee Northwest freshman Laney Sundet was second in 18:37.5.
