MHS girls tennis handles Go-Hawks in finale

WAVERLY — The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team closed the regular season with a road win, beating Waverly-Shell Rock 7-2 on Thursday night.

“It’s always great to win your last regular season meet of the year,” said MHS head coach James Christensen. “The girls were absolutely exhausted after all the Homecoming activities this week and 15 matches in 33 days. They battled through another tough opponent and it was awesome to see all the support from their teammates on the sideline spurring them on.”

The Bobcats (8-7) secured the dual meet victory with five singles wins, two of which went to deciding third-set super-tiebreakers. Kaelyn Coleman at No. 5 and Grace Diggins at No. 6 both rallied back from first-set deficits to defeat their Go-Hawk counterparts.

Coleman prevailed 5-7, 6-0, (10-8) over Taylor Badura, while Diggins defeated Morgan Smith 0-6, 6-4, (10-4).

Coleman paired with Hanna Osgood at No. 3 doubles and traveled the comeback path again in the last contest on the court, defeating Badura and Smith 4-6, 6-2, (10-6).

“Grace, Kaelyn and Hanna battled back from big deficits tonight,” said Christensen. “It was fun to see them trust the process and adjust. Those were great wins.”

Jorja Janssen and Lilyia Christen collected a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, improving to 8-6 on the season, while Coleman and Osgood moved their mark to 8-3.

“Jorja and Lilyia finished well tonight, closing both singles and doubles in straight sets,” Christensen said. “That was huge for their confidence.”

Janssen topped Nevaeh Dowlen at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Christen fought off Layla Sobczak at No. 4, 6-3, 7-5.

Marshalltown’s No. 1 singles player Kate Sandvick improved to 10-2 at the top spot with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Natalie Beck. Ellie Downs was defeated at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0, by Madayln Van Kley. The Go-Hawks’ top pair held off Sandvick and Downs at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-4.

“Kate battled some cramps but pulled out another impressive singles victory,” Christensen said. “Ellie was super active in doubles and they nearly were able to come up with another doubles victory.”

The Marshalltown Court Complex will host the Class 2A individual regional tournament Wednesday, as the Bobcats entertain Des Moines Roosevelt, Dubuque Senior, Iowa City High, Urbandale and Waukee at 9 a.m.
