SPORTS SHORTS: Blue Knights knock off MCC men’s soccer
Dakota County Technical College scored the game’s only goal during the 16th minute to defeat the Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team 1-0 on Saturday at MCC.
Diego Connell scored on an assist from Pedro Degani to lift the Blue Knights (4-4) to the eventual victory.
DCTC goalkeeper Danny Burgos turned away all three shots he faced for the clean sheet, sending the host Tigers (2-3-1) to their second shutout loss of the season.
MCC outshot the Blue Knights 9-6 thanks to an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the Tigers were unable to convert.
MCC is back at home next Saturday, hosting Columbus (Neb.) CC at 3:30 p.m.
GMG netters beat Royals, Mustangs in home triangular
GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team won a pair of matches on Thursday at home, beating Colo-NESCO and East Marshall.
The Wolverines (3-6) opened the night with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Colo-NESCO in an Iowa Star Conference South Division matchup. A balanced GMG attack was led by Arianna Pierce with seven kills, Riah Boege and Skyler Murty had six kills apiece, while Hadlee Hempy and Rhianna Murty both had four kills. Hempy handed out 22 assists.
Ava Maddux led the defense with 12 digs, while Madison Bryant and Landry August had seven each. August served 16-for-18 with four aces, while Hempy was 14-for-14 with four aces to lead the Wolverines.
In the non-conference finale, GMG beat East Marshall 25-23, 19-25, 15-9. Rhianna Murty led with nine kills and Boege had five more. Hempy finished with 18 assists and a team-leading 19 digs. Maddux had 13 digs and Bryant added 12.
Hempy was GMG’s top server going 17-for-17 with five aces.
East Marshall (6-8) was led by Natalie Condon with eight kills and Alivia Neuroth with seven. Setter Mya Gould had 22 assists. Condon racked up three blocks at the net.
Marisa Cahalan had a team-high 15 digs. Kiela Wolf served 12-for-12 with two aces, while Ashtyn Wheater was 12-for-14 with two aces.
The Mustangs beat Colo-NESCO 25-12, 25-20, in the middle match. East Marshall needed just 13 kills to get the job done as the team totaled 15 service aces. Gould was 13-for-14 with six aces to lead the way.
