Comets fall to eighth-ranked Wolves in Waterloo

WATERLOO — The BCLUW volleyball team fell to eventual champion Marion in the quarterfinals of the Waterloo Columbus Tournament on Saturday.

The Class 1A No. 7 Comets went 2-2 on the day, starting pool play with a pair of straight-set wins. BCLUW (22-6) beat back Don Bosco, 21-17, 21-10, and then Vinton-Shellsburg, 21-8, 21-6, before falling to 2A No. 8 Sumner-Fredericksburg, 21-12, 16-21, 15-11, in the last round before bracketed play.

Marion, ranked 10th in 4A, held off the hard-charging Comets 25-23, 25-21, in the quarterfinals on its way to winning the tournament title.

For BCLUW, Grace Farnsworth finished the day with 34 kills, 20 digs, two blocks and 25-of-28 serving with three aces. Olivia Peters piled up 29 kills, 18 digs, a team-leading four blocks, and 24-of-25 serving with three aces.

Cambria Wayman totaled 50 assists for the day, adding 12 digs, five kills and 23-of-26 serving with an ace. Sally Ramirez handed out 36 assists and served 37-of-39 with a team-high four aces.

Junior libero Brinna Benson tallied 17 digs to go with 25-of-25 serving and two aces, while Kylie Pekarek came away with 11 kills and two blocks. Kennedy Davis added eight kills, two blocks and 15-of-16 serving with two aces.
