Sandvick repeats on all-IAC
MHS honored after inaugural fall season
The inaugural season of fall girls tennis in Iowa was a successful one for the Marshalltown Bobcats, who had four members of the varsity lineup named to the all-Iowa Alliance Conference’s North Division teams.
Senior Ellie Downs and junior Kate Sandvick both were voted unanimous first-team all-conference selections, while seniors Lilyia Christen and Jorja Janssen were unanimous second-team picks in a vote among conference coaches.
Sandvick is a repeat unanimous first-team pick after earning the same honor at the completion of the spring season. She went 12-4 at the No. 1 singles spot this season for the Bobcats, coming up one win short of qualifying for the Class 2A state singles tournament.
Sandvick has a 22-6 career singles record.
Downs took a daunting leap from the No. 6 singles spot in the spring to the No. 2 singles position this fall. She settled for a 4-13 record this season but still gained the respect of the conference coaches, earning unanimous selection.
Downs posted a 12-18 career singles record for MHS.
Christen and Janssen both earned their first all-conference honors after grabbing feature roles on Marshalltown’s singles lineup. Janssen went 11-4 at the No. 3 singles spot and Christen was 10-6 at No. 4, helping the Bobcats to an 8-8 finish in dual meets this season.
Marshalltown placed second out of four teams in the Iowa Alliance Conference’s North Division, going 2-1 in league duals. Ames claimed the team title with a 3-0 mark.
