SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans lead local teams at NICL Cross Country

OELWEIN — Emerson Vokes repeated as North Iowa Cedar League cross country champion and the Grundy Center boys finished third out of 12 scoring teams at the conference meet on Thursday night at Hickory Grove Golf Course.

Vokes won with a time of 15 minutes, 41.52 seconds, more than 52 seconds ahead of Denver runner-up Jesse Gomez. Grundy Center sophomore Jayce Fryslie was ninth in 17:22.29, while Spartan freshman Leo Block took 11th in 17:32.96.

East Marshall finished sixth in the team standings, led by Chandler Curtis in 25th place (18:25.16). Austin Pansegrau was 27th (18:39.34), followed by Landen Shoeman (38th, 19:21.50), Maddux Bennett (42nd, 19:35.40) and Cael Curphy (43rd, 19:43.29).

Denver won the team title with 43 points, coming in ahead of Oelwein (50) and Grundy Center (105). East Marshall had 167.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck was led by Caleb Pifkin in 37th place with a time of 19:19.04. Caleb Bowser was 57th in 10:55.57.

On the girls’ side, Grace Storjohann came in fourth to lead Grundy Center to a fourth-place finish. The Spartans totaled 113 to trail Dike-New Hartford (92), Sumner-Fredericksburg (95) and Jesup (103).

Evelyn Geerdes placed 11th for the Spartans in 20:49.21, followed by Maddy Hendershot in 17th (21:29.93). Karlee Lynch (31st, 21:15.62) and Makenna Steinmeyer (50th, 23:08.08) also contributed to Grundy’s team scoring.

East Marshall (262) was 10th out of 12 scoring teams, led by Sydney Hull in seventh place in a time of 20:27.93. Abigail Hendricks was 53rd in 23:17.45, Ava Hendricks was 60th in 23:40.33, and Faith Pardekooper collected 67th in 24:05.05. Hayden Braye in 76th place (26:45.24) rounded out the Mustangs’ scoring.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s lone runner, Katelyn Monaghan, was 80th in 32:49.16.

North Tama girls finish second at Iowa Star XC meet

WAVERLY — The North Tama girls finished in second place out of five scoring teams to lead the locals at the Iowa Star Conference cross country meet on Thursday night at Wartburg College.

Rachael Murty placed sixth to lead the Redhawks with a time of 21 minutes, 26.7 seconds. Shawna Cibula was 11th in 22:26.4, followed by Aniston Cooper (16th, 23:17.4), Isla Breakenridge (19th, 23:40.7) and Gabby Seda (23rd, 24:25.8).

North Tama totaled 45 points to trail only Collins-Maxwell’s 26 in the five-team final standings. Janesville was third with 85, Meskwaki was fourth at 99, and Cedar Ridge Christian came in fifth (104).

Bree Scabbyrobe led Meskwaki with a seventh-place finish and a time of 21:35.1. Dorothy Bear was next across for the Warriors in 20th (23:44.7), followed by Martha Blackcloud (41st, 28:15.5), Bella Bear (43rd, 28:30.0) and Kaelonna Kahler (46th, 29:45.6).

BCLUW got a top-10 finish from Chloe Switzer, as she came in ninth in 21:55.6. Isabella Morris was 33rd for the Comets in 26:15.0, and Elle Schipper was 48th in 32:10.1.

Grace Mathern led GMG’s contingent with a 15th-place finish in 23:12.0. Taelyn Sash scored 27th in 25:23.3.

On the boys’ side, none of the local schools fielded complete teams. BCLUW got consecutive finishes from Olin Hupfeld (7th, 19:23.9) and Garett Bruner (8th, 18:24.1), and Tommy Hinderhofer was 12th in 18:57.0.

GMG was led by Brayton Davis in 16th place in 19:15.9, while Henry Dieleman came away with 18th place (19:45.6).

Meskwaki’s top finisher was Hagaa Slick Driscoll in 37th place (22:09.6), while Cayd Cooper of North Tama came away with 38th (22:19.1).
