SPORTS SHORTS: Wolverines wallop Valley Lutheran in regionals
GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team opened Class 1A Region 7 play with a three-set sweep of Valley Lutheran on Monday night, winning 25-4, 25-10, 25-13.
The Wolverines (11-20) toppled the Crusaders (0-22) for the second time in as many meetings this season, powered on this night by a balanced attack.
Riah Boege led GMG with five kills, while Landry August and Arianna Pierce pitched in three kills each. Hadlee Hempy finished with 15 assists.
The Wolverines were credited with 33 service aces in the victory, led by Hempy going 22-for-24 with 10 aces. Rhianna Murty served 15-of-17 with eight aces, while August had six aces on 7-of-9 serving.
GMG advances to face Don Bosco (19-15) in Wednesday’s regional quarterfinals in Gilbertville.
Meskwaki marches into regional quarterfinals
COGGON — The Meskwaki volleyball team moved through the first round of Class 1A Region 7 play with a 3-2 victory over host North Linn on Monday night.
Dorothy Bear piled up 13 kills and Layla Tahahwah had 10 more for the Warriors (5-16). Karsyn Wolf and Isabella Bear both added six kills. Lalaya Shuckahosee totaled 17 assists and Eva Roberts had 16 more.
Johnelle Roberts led Meskwaki’s defense with 15 digs. Wolf had five of the team’s 10 service aces.
The Warriors advance to face No. 9 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (24-13) at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Reinbeck.
