Marshall County trio voted all-state football

Marshall County’s perennial playoff qualifier was well-represented on the Iowa Football Coaches Association’s annual all-state team, and so was its cross-county rival.

West Marshall’s eighth-straight appearance in the playoffs came with individual accolades for a pair of players, while East Marshall’s first trip to the postseason since 1992 warranted honors as well.

West Marshall senior wide receiver Kinnick Geers was named first-team all-state in Class 1A by the IFCA in a vote of statewide coaches, while junior defensive end Beckham DeSotel scored second-team honors.

East Marshall senior defensive tackle Wyatt Stalzer was selected to the Class A second-team defense as well after stacking up tackle after tackle.

Geers, a 5-foot-7, 165-pound receiver and kick returner, was among the state’s top pass-catchers this season. In 1A he was tops in yards per catch (23.6), reeling in 41 passes for 969 yards and nine touchdowns.

Geers ranked 15th in receptions, third in yards and sixth in touchdown receptions. He represented 72 percent of West Marshall’s receiving yards this season.

For the Trojans, Geers also was the team’s top returner, averaging 29.6 yards per kick return and 23.7 yards per punt return. As a defensive back, Geers finished with 41.5 tackles and two interceptions.

DeSotel, 6-2, 215-pound junior defensive end, completed the season with 33 tackles (21 solo), 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 quarterback sacks. He ranked 11th in all of 1A in sacks.

DeSotel also had eight receptions for 113 yards from his tight end position, and he averaged 38.6 yards per punt as the team’s punter.

West Marshall ranked seventh in 1A by allowing just 15.2 points per game, finishing 7-3 after a second-round playoff loss.

East Marshall’s run to the playoffs for the first time in 33 years was captained by its 6-2, 250-pound lineman. Stalzer anchored the team’s offensive line and was ranked among the state’s top defensive linemen.

Stalzer finished the fall with 67.5 tackles from his down lineman position, ranking 14th in all of Class A. His 44 solo tackles ranked 17th, his 31.5 tackles for loss led the class, and his seven quarterback sacks tied him for seventh.

East Marshall finished the season 5-4 after a first-round playoff loss to eventual state runner-up St. Ansgar. The Mustangs’ record matched their best (2017) since going 6-3 in 2010.
