BIG FOUR WRESTLING: No. 4 Cyclones derail No. 15 Panthers
AMES — The No. 4 Iowa State wrestling team defeated in-state rival No. 15 Northern Iowa on Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum, taking eight of 10 matches to come out on top, 28-6.
Iowa State (11-2, 7-1 Big 12) held a 24-8 advantage in takedowns against UNI (10-8, 4-4). This marks the first time since the 2003-04 season the Cyclones notched dual victories over both in-state rivals Iowa and UNI.
ISU won the first five matches and claimed three matches via bonus points, including heavyweight Yonger Bastida’s 12th technical fall of the season, 21-6, over Grant Stromberg.
No. 7 Hawkeyes roll past Purdue, 32-6
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The seventh-ranked Iowa wrestling team defeated Purdue, 32-6, on Sunday at Holloway Gymnasium. The Hawkeyes tallied 20 takedowns to Purdue’s three.
Eighth-ranked Drake Ayala piled up a 19-4 technical fall over Blake Boarman at 133 pounds. Patrick Kennedy earned six points with a win by injury default at 165.
In the marquee match, fourth-ranked Joey Blaze of Purdue defeated No. 3 Michael Caliendo 7-4.
Iowa picked up more bonus points at 197, as Harvey Ludington needed only 4:23 to pin Noah Weaver.
UNI wrestling falls to Mountaineers
CEDAR FALLS — The No. 15 Northern Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 19 West Virginia, 23-13, in Saturday’s Big 12 Conference dual. The Panthers fell to 8-1 all-time against the Mountaineers.
UNI’s No. 13 Jared Simma picked up a top-15 ranked win at 174 pounds, beating No. 14 Brody Conley 8-5. Ryder Downey (165) got the 60th win of his career, beating Sasha Gavronsky by 12-1 major decision.
