SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat matmen crown two champs in Pella
PELLA — The Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team crowned a pair of champions on its way to a third-place finish at Pella’s Bill Van Horn Invitational on Saturday.
The Bobcats totaled 157.5 points and trailed only Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (178.5) and Boone (158.5) in the 16-team tournament.
Marshalltown’s Nicholas Wise (144 pounds) and Dalton Zednichek (190) were crowned champions of their respective brackets, both beating another ranked wrestler along the way.
Wise (10-0), rated third in Class 3A by IAwrestle, pinned Cedar Rapids Xavier’s No. 10 Kelso Brueck in the semifinals in 1 minute, 28 seconds, before pinning Ottumwa’s Tayton Frueh in 2:30 in the finals. Zednichek (10-1), rated sixth, scored a 10-6 decision over No. 4 Dusty Cook of Xavier in their championship match.
MHS also got third-place finishes from Nicholas Million (113) and Carson Wright (165). Million (9-2) suffered his lone loss in the semifinals by fall to Class 2A No. 1 Cael McCabe of Fairfield. Wright (8-3), like Million, went 3-1 on the day with a semifinal loss by technical fall to No. 7 Brody Warrick of Boone.
Anthony Chavez (157) and Jaxson Hinkle (285) both placed fifth for MHS, Colby Cross (150) came in sixth, while Jose Corral Coronado (120) and John Schoenfelder (215) were both seventh.
McDonald, Gonzales lead MHS girls at Boone
BOONE — The Marshalltown girls’ wrestling team claimed two bracket titles on its way to fifth place at the 14-team Boone Invitational on Saturday.
The Bobcats racked up 150 points to finish behind Ames (203), Gilbert (175.5), Independence (156.5) and Boone (154.5).
Madylin McDonald won the 145-pound championship while Nevaeh Gonzales won the 235 title to lead MHS on the day. McDonald (8-3) went 3-0 with a semifinal pin of Ridge View’s Meleigha Buckendahl and a 5-2 decision over Nevada’s Adalynn Muhlbauer for the title. Gonzales piled up three wins by pinfall for her crown, topping Nevada’s Grayce Coree in the finals in a time of 2:51.
Ella DeMonte (9-3) went 3-1 with a finals loss to Cece Wagner of Gilbert at 170, while Addyson Lovelace (5-1) was 3-1 at 155 on her way to third place. Olivia Wise (8-6) was fourth at 190, Natalee Nickey (6-4) took fifth at 100, and Ireland Banderas was sixth at 235.
Trojans topple South Hamilton in HOIAC play
JEWELL — Four players scored in double figures as the West Marshall boys’ basketball team went into the holiday break with a 62-41 victory over host South Hamilton in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
The Trojans (4-2, 3-2) won all four quarters to claim the conference victory. Teegun Edler scored a team-leading 17 points for West Marshall, Connor Kemmerer got 13 points, Beckham DeSotel scored 11 and Evan Siegert added 10.
Sam Koehnk led South Hamilton (0-7, 0-5) with 15 points.
Wolverines wallop Meskwaki for third-straight win
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The GMG boys’ basketball team ran into the holiday break with its third-straight win, beating Meskwaki 63-30 on Friday night.
The Wolverines (4-3, 3-2) used a 20-point second quarter to break free for a 38-17 halftime lead over the host Warriors (0-6, 0-5).
Rider Kupka came away with game-highs of 20 points and eight rebounds to lead GMG to victory. Easton Sash had 15 points and five boards, while Ethan Klemesrud got 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Jacoby Woodbury and Caleb Ferch both contributed eight points in the win.
Jarvis Bear led Meskwaki with seven points, Jaymison Hill had six points off the bench, while Dontavious Stick-Driscoll and Dorian Velazquez pitched in with five points each.
Comets can’t keep up with Redhawk girls
CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team sustained its fifth-straight loss, falling 54-22 to North Tama in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown.
BCLUW (1-5, 1-4) was held to five points or fewer in three of the four quarters against the visiting Redhawks (4-3, 3-2).
Chloe Switzer piled up 15 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocked shots to lead the Comets. Addison Moeller added four points and 10 rebounds, while Kara Hill contributed three points and four boards.
UNI’s Bond named to Lou Henson Award watch list
BOSTON — Northern Iowa men’s basketball player Leon Bond III has been named to the Lou Henson Award early season watchlist.
Named in honor of Lou Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who appeared in 12 NCAA Tournaments and the 1989 NCAA Final Four with the Fighting Illini, the award is presented annually to the top play in mid-major college basketball.
Bond, a Wauwatosa, Wis. native and redshirt junior for the Panthers, is among 50 players selected to the watchlist, which also includes two other athletes from the Missouri Valley Conference in Murray State’s Javon Jackson, Bradley Jaquan Johnson, Belmont’s Tyler Lundblade, Drake’s Jalen Quinn.
The recipient of the award is determined by a 10-member voting committee of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members from collegeinsider.com. The winner will be announced in April at the Final Four in Indianapolis.
Bond, a MVC preseason watchlist member, leads Northern Iowa with 13.7 and 5.8 rebounds per game through the first 11 games of the 2025-26 season. He also leads the Panthers with 12 total blocks while shooting 50% from the field.
