SPORTS SHORTS: First half dooms MCC men’s basketball at KCKCC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t cover an 18-point halftime deficit and fell 79-57 to Kansas City Kansas CC on Monday night.

The visiting Tigers (4-11) were held to 27.6 percent shooting in the first half, going 8-for-29 from the field and 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range.

MCC was led by 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench from Chason St. Vil. Antoine Glasper contributed 12 points, Tre’Von Coney got nine points and Tristan Christopher had seven points and five boards.

Kamoni Ford had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Kangaroos (10-7), and Malik Lewis also scored 15 points.

MCC is back at home Wednesday for a doubleheader with NIACC.

UNI’s Bond III tabbed as MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Northern Iowa redshirt junior swingman Leon Bond III has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Player of the Week for men’s basketball as announced by the league office.

This is the first weekly conference honor for Bond and the second MVC Player of the Week nod in his career.

Bond scored a season-high 26 points in UNI’s 75-63 home win over Oakland on Saturday night, helping the Panthers improve to 8-2 on the season. Bond also pulled down seven rebounds in the win over the Golden Grizzlies, and shot 9-of-14 from the field (64.2 percent) and 50 percent from 3-point range (3-for-6).

Bond leads UNI with 14.1 points per game through 10 games this season. He adds 5.3 rebounds per contest and a team-high nine blocked shots, shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 46.3 percent from 3-point range (19-of-41).
