SPORTS SHORTS: Storm girls score third place at Iowa Falls-Alden

IOWA FALLS — The South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team took third place at the Iowa Falls-Alden Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 20, after sending seven wrestlers to their respective finals.

The Storm scored 167 points to trail only Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (190) and Iowa Valley (175) while finishing ahead of the host Cadets (151.5) in the 12-team tournament.

SH-BCLUW crowned three champions in Hailee Robinson (105 pounds), Ceanna White (135) and Taya Hollingsworth (155). Layla Price (100), Megyn Hollingsworth (170), Kaitlynn Dickes (190) and Adrienne Caster (235) each earned runner-up results.

Robinson improved to 13-7 on the season with a pair of wins by fall, both over Iowa Valley’s Kenley Koenig. White (19-4) went 3-0 on the day with three pins, including a second-period pin over Iowa Falls-Alden’s Aubree Silvey in the finals. Taya Hollingsworth (20-2), ranked sixth in Class 1A by IAwrestle, was 3-0 with three first-period pins, flattening Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Juliette Koch in 1:35 in the title bout.

Megyn Hollingsworth (19-4) went 3-1 on the day with three pins, suffering her only loss to sixth-ranked Raelene Hawkins of Iowa Valley in an 8-0 major decision in the finals. Dickes (10-4) picked up two pins before getting pinned by No. 4 Maren Subbert of H-D-C in their championship match.

Khloe Neal (110) finished fourth at 110 and Brayleigh Gardner was sixth at 120.

West Marshall girls get fifth at Chariton Invite

CHARITON — The West Marshall girls’ wrestling team tallied 116.5 points on its way to fifth place at the Chariton Invite on Saturday, Dec. 20

The Trojans were led by a runner-up finish from Kielly Kasal at 100 pounds. Kasal (15-6) completed a 2-1 day with a pin, a technical fall, and finally a loss by fall to Class 2A’s top-ranked Nora Ohnemus of Indianola.

Elyse Ranson improved to 19-5 at 155 with a third-place finish, going 3-1 with only a semifinal loss to Clarinda’s Jalon Olson. All three of Ranson’s wins were pins.

Bella Sosa and Makaylie Tarbell finished third and fourth, respectively at 170, after Sosa scored a pin of Tarbell in the third-place match. Sosa (12-4) went 3-1 with three pins, while Tarbell was 2-2 with two pins.

Reese Buschbom went 2-2 with two pins at 190, Zoey Wignall came in fifth at 125, and Grace Greenwood earned sixth at 145 for the Trojans.

Only two Mustangs go to Roland-Story tourney

STORY CITY — The East Marshall boys’ wrestling team sent just two wrestlers to the Jim Kinyon Norsemen Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 20, scoring four points.

The Mustangs came in last out of 22 teams in attendance. Sergeant Bluff-Luton (203.5) held off Williamsburg (193.5) and Atlantic (190.5) for the team title.

East Marshall’s points came from Jordan Meling, who went 1-3 at 138 pounds. Meling (10-5) pinned his first-round opponent — Southeast Valley’s Caden Milham — in 31 seconds, but he was edged out on the scoreboard in his last three matches.

Hayden Boles (5-8) was 0-2 at 126 pounds.
