SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs march past HLV/TC in playoff opener
LE GRAND — The East Marshall boys’ basketball team made good on its top seed in Class 1A District 6 by stomping HLV/TC 97-42 in Monday’s first round playoff game.
The Mustangs (16-6) scored 31 points in the opening quarter and 58 by halftime to ease through their postsesaon opener.
Jackson Bidwell had 18 points, four assists and four steals for East Marshall, while Jackson Busch got 15 points and 10 boards. Blake Neuroth had 10 points, Cael Curphy added 10 points, and Eli Burns finished with nine points in the victory. Cody Weaver contributed seven points and seven assists as well for the Mustangs, who will host North Tama (14-8) on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Sean McCulloch and Cash Hawkins had nine points apiece to pac HLV/TC (7-16).
West Marshall falls to Pleasantville in district play
PLEASANTVILLE — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team was defeated 65-38 by Pleasantville in Monday’s opening round of Class 2A District 5 play.
The visiting Trojans (6-16) fell behind and couldn’t catch up as the host Trojans (14-8) advanced to the district quarterfinals.
Braylon Bingham scored a game-high 24 points to lead Pleasantville, which will visit Grundy Center on Thursday night.
Ryder Gile had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead West Marshall. Connor Kemmerer contributed nine points, Teegun Edler had eight and Evan Siegert chipped in six points and six assists in defeat.
MCC women go cold in loss at Iowa Central
FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team had a poor shooting performance in Saturday’s 82-43 loss to Iowa Central.
The Tigers (7-20, 4-15) shot just 18.2 percent (12-for-66) from the field in the road loss, going 25 percent (5-for-20) from 3-point range. Kenijae Cherry led MCC with nine points and eight rebounds but on 3-of-18 shooting.
Olivia Heartwell had eight points for the Tigers, Shenell Stewart added five points and seven boards, and Ariyanah Custard chipped in seven points in the loss.
Trista Ohlmeier racked up 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead Iowa Central (20-7, 13-6). Ashlin Jacobsen and Izzy Bassett both added 17 points for the Tritons.
Wolverines move through winless AGWSR in regionals
GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team got career-high games from a pair of players to power it to a 53-42 win over AGWSR in Thursday’s Class 1A Region 5 first-round pairing.
Sophomores Skyler Murty and Arianna Pierce led the Wolverines with 18 and 16 points, respectively, racking up career-high scoring performances in the first round of the playoffs.
Murty also had seven rebounds and five steals as the Wolverines (12-10) advanced. Taelyn Sash tallied eight points, eight rebounds, 11 steals and six assists, and Makayla Pendleton chipped in six points and two blocked shots.
Natalie Sizemore scored 16 points and Carlie Hoodjer had 12 to lead AGWSR 0-22.
Comets close season with loss to Meskwaki
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team bowed out in the first round of Class 1A Region 5 play, falling 67-19 to host Meskwaki.
Chloe Switzer had eight points and Addison Moeller added six points and eight rebounds for the Comets (1-16), who lost their final 16 games of the season. Adelynn Zoske added two points and six rebounds.
Bree Scabbyrobe racked up 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead Meskwaki (17-3), and Martha Blackcloud added 20 points, eight boards and six steals.
