SPORTS SHORTS: Comets collect narrow victory over Knights

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team improved to 2-0 with Tuesday’s 39-38 victory over Union Community.

The Comets trailed by five at halftime before outscoring the Knights 26-20 after the break. Allison Engle led BCLUW with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Chloe Walters finished with eight points and 10 boards. Leah Pieper added six points and three assists, and Katie Hill contributed five points and nine rebounds.

Reagan Sorensen led Union (0-2) with 17 points.

GMG basketball sweeps Valley Lutheran

CEDAR FALLS — The GMG girls’ and boys’ basketball teams swept Valley Lutheran in their Iowa Star Conference openers on Tuesday night. The Wolverine girls prevailed 73-28, while the boys were 42-23 winners.

Jocee Mason and Adelyn Sienknecht led the GMG girls (2-0, 1-0) with 14 points apiece, Jenna Yilek and Kaylea Duden scored 12 each, Marriah Stonewall tallied 10 points and Dylan Mathern netted nine.

Taylor Mauser led Valley Lutheran (0-1) with 13 points.

On the boys’ side, Abe Dieleman delivered a team-leading 14 points in the Wolverines’ season-opening win. Kooper Gill finished with 10 points, Jabari Woodbury added nine and Kaleb Gill finished with six points.

West Marshall boys sent to 0-2

IOWA FALLS – Blake Janssen and Andrew Bicknese both scored 20 points to help lead Iowa Falls-Alden to a 55-47 victory over West Marshall in Tuesday’s non-conference boys basketball game.

West Marshall (0-2) fell behind by three after the first quarter, 13-10, before getting outscored 19-4 in the second period. The Trojans won the second half 33-23, getting back to within six at one point in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Joey Tollefson led West Marshall with 13 points and six assists, and Kinnick Christensen contributed 12 points and five rebounds. Parker Reese had seven points and five boards, TJ Schular scored six points, and Grahm Nason added five points with a team-leading eight rebounds.
