Marshall County Attorney Jordan Gaffney announces that service providers within Marshall County providing prevention, treatment and recovery services to combat the ongoing opioid epidemic may once again apply for grants to implement and expand services.
"The opportunities presented by the opioid settlement funds are the kinds of things that arise only once in a generation. The opioid crisis left behind and continues to leave behind devastation and tragedy in its wake. With this funding, we are able to fight back by strengthening our greatest asset in Marshall County: our community."
Counties across Iowa began receiving funds from the national opioid settlements in 2022. In total, Marshall County has received just under $500,000 and will continue to receive funds over the course of several years. Funds received from the settlements and allocated through the grant funding opportunities are non-taxpayer monies. Funds received from the settlements must be used to support opioid abuse prevention, treatment and recovery programs. The Marshall County Attorney's Office, Marshall County Auditor-Recorder, Marshall County Public Health, Marshall County Sheriff, Marshalltown Police Department, Prairie Ridge Behavioral Healthcare and Youth and Shelter Services of
Marshall County are partnering to review grant applications for the implementation of settlement funds.
Gaffney said, "In the past couple of years, Marshall County has invested in public-private partnerships and program opportunities that put these funds to work in meaningful ways right here in this community. It's been exciting to have a part in helping these agencies and organizations move forward to pursue programs engaging in opioid abuse prevention, response and treatment. We've gained momentum over the past few years, and I'm looking forward to building upon that momentum."
Grant applicants are asked to submit a Letter of Intent by 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 and submit an Application for Funding by 5 p.m. on Sept. 15. More information about the program, including how to apply, is available at: www.marshallcountyia.gov/444/Attorney
