Healthy Steps for Older Adults Class in Le Grand

By Times-Republican 2 min read

LE GRAND -- Falls can threaten an older adult's health and independence, but many risks can be reduced. In recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness Week this September, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging will offer Healthy Steps for Older Adults in Le Grand to help adults take practical steps to stay active, safe and confident.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week, observed annually during the first week of fall, reinforces that falls are not an inevitable part of aging. The national campaign encourages older adults to identify the personal risk factors and reduce them through education, exercise and practical lifestyle changes.

HSOA is an evidence-based fall-risk screening and education program for adults age 50 and older. Participants will learn strategies for safer footwear, home safety, bone-healthy nutrition and regular physical activity, along with simple exercises they can do at home to build strength, improve balance, and increase confidence.

Healthy Steps for Older Adults is from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Le Grand Community Center, 206 N. Vine St., Le Grand. Lunch is provided, and each participant will receive a comprehensive program handbook.

A suggested voluntary contribution of $25 supports the program; scholarships are available upon request. Space is limited. Register by Sept. 15 by contacting Stacie Foster at 641-479-2464.

The class advances the goals of Falls Prevention Awareness Week (Sept. 21-25) by giving older Iowans practical tools to lower the risk of falling, protect independence and continue doing the activities they enjoy.
