A HUNTER SAFETY class is scheduled for Aug. 20 and the 22. Enrollment is now open. The course will be taught at the local Marshall County Izaak Walton League grounds by volunteer instructors. This course is designed for youth ages 12 or older, but adults are also welcome to enroll.
Residents and nonresident hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972 must satisfactorily complete a hunter education course in order to obtain a hunting license. A person 11 years old may enroll and take the course, but those who are 11 and successfully complete the course shall be issued a certificate of completion, which becomes valid on that person’s 12th birthday.
Residents are the normal class participants. Course materials stress safety, and compliance with Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations and laws. One-on one firearm target instruction will be offered for shotguns and .22 rifles. Videos about issues related to hunting will be shown to illustrate common sense scenarios of how to correctly assess field situations.
The course begins Thursday evening at 6 pm at the Ikes clubhouse located 2 miles south of Iowa Avenue on Smith Avenue. By 9 pm the evening presentations will be completed. Then on Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning at 8 a.m., field demonstrations will start on shotgun safety, clay bird target shooting, archery, game tracking and game meat care.
More classroom time will tell about firearms safety. A multiple choice test will conclude the day prior to 4 pm. If satisfactory test results are made, a certificate will be issued to the student.
It is very important that students attend both the Thursday evening session and all day on Saturday to complete the course. Once an approved hunter education course is completed, it is good for a lifetime. The Iowa courses are honored in all other states and Provinces of Canada.
