The Marshalltown Area United Way is excited to announce its signature fundraising event, the 17th Annual Power of the Purse Oct. 23 at Midnight Garden, 1501 S. 17th Ave., Marshalltown. This year’s event theme, “Couture in Bloom - Accessorizing for a Stronger Community,” celebrates the beauty of generosity, the strength of community partnerships and the lasting impact the community can make when people come together.
“As this is my first-year leading Power of the Purse as Executive Director of the Marshalltown Area United Way, I am incredibly excited to build upon the success of this beloved community tradition,” said Debbie Collins, executive director. “This event is about so much more than beautiful purses, it’s about investing in our neighbors and ensuring our partner agencies have the resources they need to serve those who rely on them daily.”
Guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening featuring hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, Louis Vitton raffles, a silent and live auction, exciting prize opportunities and, of course, the signature designer purse auction all while supporting programs that strengthen lives throughout Marshall County.
Power of the Purse is one of Marshalltown Area United Way’s premier fundraising events, helping provide funding for 25 partner agencies delivering 30 essential programs that improve health, strengthen financial stability, expand opportunities for youth and build a stronger, more resilient community.
Community members are encouraged to purchase tickets early and invite friends, family or coworkers to enjoy an evening of philanthropy, fun and fashion while supporting a great cause.

Marshalltown Area United Way is currently seeking event sponsors, silent and live auction donations, and raffle prize donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals. Suggested donations include new purses, handbags, wallets and accessories, Jewelry and fashion items, Gift cards and gift certificates, Spa and self-care packages, Dining and entertainment experiences, Travel and weekend getaway packages, Sports and recreation packages and Unique local experiences and themed baskets.
Every donation helps create an exciting event while raising essential funds that stay right here in Marshall County. Donations will be accepted through Sept. 19 and may be dropped off at the Marshalltown Area United Way office located inside the Marshalltown Arts & Civic Center (MACC), 709 S. Center St., Suite 135, Marshalltown.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our businesses, sponsors, volunteers, and community members,” Collins said. “Their support allows us to continue investing in programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of local residents.”
