New Judo program for adults introduced

By Times-Republican 2 min read

Marshalltown Parks and Recreation is excited to introduce a new Judo program for adults ages 16 and older, providing residents with an opportunity to learn a new martial art while building strength, confidence and practical self-defense skills.

Judo classes will be offered under the instruction of Master Shane Johnson and will focus on throwing techniques, joint locks and grappling. The program is designed to provide education, self-defense and fitness in a welcoming environment. Judo can also be a great supplement for individuals with a background or interest in wrestling.

"We're excited to add Judo to our growing lineup of recreational opportunities," said Parks and Recreation Director Kelsie Stafford. "Programs like this give residents another way to stay active, learn new skills and try something different right here in Marshalltown."

Classes will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The program is open to anyone 16 years of age or older, regardless of previous Judo experience.

The first few classes can be attended without a uniform, although participants are encouraged to wear comfortable athletic clothing. After the introductory period, participants will need a Judo gi (uniform), which can be purchased through the instructor.

The first three sessions will be offered on the following dates: Session 1: Oct. 6-28; Session 2: Nov. 3-25 and Session 3: Dec. 1-23.

Registration is available through Marshalltown Parks and Recreation. Residents interested in the cost of the program, learning more or registering for Judo can visit the City of Marshalltown's Judo program page at: www.marshalltown-ia.gov/864/Judo?utm_source=chatgpt.com or contact Parks and Recreation at 641-754-5715.
