If you struggle with houseplants, the answer might be succulents, some of the lowest-maintenance indoor plants you can grow. Cynde Schreiber a Warren County Master Gardener will talk about the selection and care of succulents at the Marshalltown Garden Club meeting. The program is at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. Succulents have many classic and unusual shapes, unlimited colors, and ease of maintenance.
Taking care of succulents is relatively simple. Their two main requirements are good drainage and plenty of light. If you’re growing succulents inside, the best place for them is a south facing window, or under a grow light. During the summer, the best place for them is outdoors, but they will grow fine indoors if they have enough light.
Succulents originate from arid, dry regions all over the world, with the highest concentration and variety found in South Africa and Africa. Succulents have many classic and unusual shapes, unlimited colors, and ease of maintenance. You can enjoy these amazing plants as small specimens in pots. Many types of succulents can be grown indoors and out--but if you live in a central Iowa and plan to grow succulents outdoors, make sure you choose a type of succulent that’s suited to survive winters in our hardiness zone.
