Agriculture and Iowa history are hand-in-glove.
Fittingly, author, farmer and journalist Beth Hoffman will discuss efforts to grow food profitably on a Iowa farm during the Sept. 8, 5 p.m. "History on Second Tuesday" event at the Marshalltown Public Library.
The event is co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Marshall County and Humanities Iowa.
Hoffman and husband John Hogeland were living in San Francisco but Hoffman wanted to put into practice her ideas of sustainable agriculture and moved to Lovilia.
She will discuss the challenges of growing crops and raising grass-fed beef profitably in today's cyclical farm economy.
The initiative has proved challenging but the couple is persevering.
She detailed those experiences in her book, "Bet the Farm: The Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America."
Copies of her book will be available for purchase.
