PRAIRIE CITY -- Discover bird watching at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge by joining a free program scheduled at 8 a.m. on Sept. 26 at 9981 Pacific St., Prairie City. September is a great time to get outside to see and hear birds in the oak savanna and tallgrass prairie. Take a guided walk along the 1/2-mile Oak Savanna Trail loop. Free loaner binoculars will be available for checkout.
Participants can enjoy free bagels and coffee at the visitor center after the walk. This event caters to birdwatchers of all skill levels, ages eight and older. Meet the guide at the parking lot of the Oak Savanna Trail.
The Oak Savanna Trail is a 1/2 mile loop with a gravel surface and gradual inclines. The staff recommend wearing pants, sturdy walking shoes, a hat and bringing drinking water. People may also want to bring insect repellent.
