Marshalltown Feral Support is inviting the community to a potluck luncheon to spread awareness from noon to 2 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Arts and Civic Center.
The luncheon will be celebrating more than 500 surgeries performed by Central Iowa Veterinary Service in Melbourne since Oct. 4, 2022. There will be limited seating, but food and beverages will be provided until 2 p.m. Organizers are working on holding a silent auction during the event.
This year at Marshalltown Feral Support:
In April with a goal of 38 cats – 31 were caught and 23 fixed
In May, the goal was 36, caught 48 and fixed 36
In June, goal was 40, caught 76 and fixed 33
In July, goal was 40, caught 42, fixed 14
In August, goal was 38, caught 39 and fixed 31
Many caught that did not survive, were sadly cases of flea anemia or last stages of leukemia while others succumbed to fatal injuries, presumably by cars. All kittens that were rescued found forever homes. The month of August found 29 homes for rescued cats.
From May 11-15 and Aug. 24-27, each week caught a total of 16 cats and brought them in for medical evaluation, vaccinating, deworming/flea treatments, testing for Leukemia, heartworm and aids. These were neutered or spayed saving hundreds of future litters from brutal Iowa winters and spreadable diseases. The week of June 24 netted 18 total cats in a single with a week's total of 30 cats.
The potluck will talk about the future goals and ways individuals can help the feral cat effort. For more information or how to volunteer, call 641-354-3870.
