AMES -- The Workspace at the Iowa State Memorial Union has new art classes and drop-in crafts beginning in mid-September. Its hours are from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday through the end of November. Everyone is welcome at The Workspace.
• Trinket Art Drop-in Craft
Turn a plain object into a curated collection of tiny treasures. Choose from a vast assortment. All ages welcome with an accompanying adult. Drop in Sept. 14 through Oct. 9. Base items include photo frame, wood panel, plaques and more.
• Paint Your Own Pottery: Nature Escape Week. Drop in Sept. 14-19. Price varies.
• Vinyl Record Painting Drop-in Craft
Browse through our crate of old vinyl and use paint or acrylic markers to turn a record into a piece of wall art. All ages welcome with an accompanying adult. Drop in Sept. 14 through Oct. 17.
• Paint Your Own Pottery: Ramen Bowl Week
Paint a bowl for ramen - a college student staple! When picking up the bowl after firing, Workspace will throw in a pack of Maruchan ramen. All ages welcome with an accompanying adult. Drop in Sept. 21-26. Price varies.
• Triskele Paper Globes Pop Up with Karen Van Wert
Transform three strips of paper into a 3D globe! The name triskele comes from an ancient three-part spiral design, reflected in the three-part construction of these globes. Open to ages 18+. Sept. 22 at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. for one hour. Register for a timeslot to hold a space.
• Block Printmaking Class with Kat Schmidt
Using beginner tools and a soft linoleum block, learn the art of relief printmaking. Carve a pattern, illustration, symbol or phrase onto a 4" x 6" block and make an edition (set) of 15 prints on paper. Leave class with a carved block, prints to gift or share, and the foundational skills to keep printing on your own. Open to ages 18+. All supplies included in class fee. • Ladder Shelf Woodshop Class with John Burright
Build a ladder shelf that looks as good as the items displayed on it. Thursdays beginning Sept. 24, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for 3 weeks. Register at midwestix.com
• Halloween Needle Felting Workshop with Sarah Cady
Learn the basics of needle felting with some spooky season favorites. Open to ages 18+. All supplies are included in the class fee, and participants will be able to take home a set of needles and foam block for future felting. From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sept. 29. Register at midwestix.com
• Argentine Tango Lessons with Valerie Williams
This multi-level Milonga (dance party) is an opportunity to learn, enjoy the expressive music, and meet new people. Beginners, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Intermediate, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tango meets Sundays through Dec. 13 (except holiday and break weekends). Lessons meet in Room 3512, and drop-ins are welcome.
