Nature Story Hour: Wildlife Rehab is Aug. 6

Nature Story Hour is held on the first and third Thursdays at 10 a.m. during the summer months at Leonard Grimes Memorial Amphitheater at the Grimes Farm, 2349 233rd St., Marshalltown. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held indoors at the center. The program will start with a storybook read-aloud, an educational program by the naturalist on the topic and an activity or craft. Each session will last about 30 - 40 minutes. National and local blood supply is dangerously low

JOHNSTON — LifeServe Blood Center is calling on eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood immediately, after weeks of significant declines in donations have led to concerning shortages. Right now, LifeServe has just a 1-2 day supply of type O-negative, O-positive and A-negative blood. Other blood types are facing a 2-3 day supply. Without increased donations, this level of supply can lead to situations where hospitals may not have enough blood on hand to treat all patients who need it. Fall 2026 Master Gardener Volunteer Orientation applications open

AMES — Applications are open for the fall 2026 Garden Academy cohort, a required training for anyone who would like to become an Iowa Master Gardener. Garden Academy will be offered in 34 counties this fall including Hardin and Tama, with a deadline to apply of Aug. 14. Online dove hunting workshop registration opens

DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is offering a program to teach skills needed to hunt, field dress and cook mourning doves to individuals who have little to no dove hunting experience.
