Election Day polls open noon to 8 p.m.

Election Day polls are open Tuesday to decide whether the Iowa Valley Community College District will be able to bond for $32 million toward fixes, renovations and more district-wide.

Absentee voting has been taking place over the past several weeks and about 750 people had voted early as of mid-day Monday.

Voters will effectively have two options for in-person voting Tuesday.

“They can go here at the Annex (101 E. Main St.) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.,” Marshall County Assistant Auditor Cindy Reutzel said of in-person absentee voting.

Election Day voting will officially run noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Instead of going to the Annex building, voters will have to cast a ballot at their designated polling place, determined by the school district in which they live.

Here are the polling locations for those living in Marshall County school districts:

Marshalltown Community School District

• Voters in Marshalltown’s first and second wards will vote at Malloy Hall of the Iowa Veterans Home, 1301 Summit St.

• Voters in Marshalltown’s third and fourth wards will vote at Fisher Community Center, 709 S. Center St.

• Voters living in the Marshalltown Community School District but outside of Marshalltown city limits will also vote at Fisher Community Center.

East Marshall Community School District

• All voters within the East Marshall district will vote at the Le Grand Community Building, 206 N. Vine St., Le Grand.

Green Mountain-Garwin Community School District

• All voters living in the Marshall County portion of the GMG school district will vote at the Green Mountain Park Community Building, 101 Woolston St., Green Mountain.

• All voters living in the Tama County portion of the GMG school district will vote at the Garwin Community Building, 205 Main St., Garwin.

West Marshall Community School District

• All voters in the West Marshall district will cast ballots at State Center City Hall, 118 E. Main St., State Center.

Reutzel said the first results to come rolling in Tuesday will be the absentee ballots cast prior to Election Day voting. Marshall County is one of 10 participating in the election, all of which fall at least partially within the Iowa Valley district.

The district includes large parts of Marshall, Hardin, Tama, Grundy and Poweshiek counties and smaller portions of Butler, Franklin, Hamilton, Story and Jasper counties.

Per Iowa Code, the bond election must achieve at least 60 percent voter approval in order to pass. Property tax payers within the district would pay more in taxes if the bond passes – district CFO Kathy Pink estimated a person with a property valued at $100,000 would pay about $41.50 per $1,000 taxable valuation more per year in that case.

District leaders have said the need for maintenance, repair work and renovations set to happen if the bond passes is paramount.

The idea to go out for a bond gained momentum in early 2017 and the bond question was approved by the district board of directors in February.
