Blastoff: Comets win first round

BCLUW and Grundy Center teams advance; 2 Redhawks too

Anderson tied for the low round of the day in leading the Comets to a team title and a spot in next week’s regional finals in Nashua.

UNION — A cardback determined the meet medalist, but the BCLUW girls’ golf team left nothing to chance when it came to getting back within one round of state.

The Comets hosted a Class 1A first-round regional meet on Monday at South Hardin Recreation Area, using their home-course advantage to take the team title by 16 strokes. BCLUW shot 408 to set the pace in front of the seven-team pack, with Grundy Center (424) and Lynnville-Sully (465) also gaining advancement to next week’s regional finals in Nashua.

BCLUW senior Lauren Anderson settled for runner-up medalist honors after a cardback separated her round of 94 from the same score shot by North Tama senior Olivia Schrier, but the Comets had more than enough cushion to cash their ticket to the next round.

Three BCLUW golfers finished inside the top eight, and Grundy Center had the same success for the runner-up finish. Behind BCLUW senior Mackenzie Trinkle’s fourth-place round of 101, Grundy Center charted the next three spots with Frannie Brown (102), Josie Holke-Farnam (103) and Lauren Dirks (103). Lili Wilson tied for eighth for the Comets at 104, sharing the spot with another North Tama senior — Claire Schafer.

Both Schrier and Schafer advance alongside the top three teams to next Monday’s Region 3 final at Nashua Town & Country Club, which tees up at 10 a.m. The Redhawks missed out on the third team position by eight strokes despite playing with only four golfers.

Bailey Ashton rounded out BCLUW’s team score with her round of 109, while Lauren Buhrow’s 116 sealed second place for Grundy Center.

AGWSR’s fifth-place team finish was paced by Mollie Abkes with a 110, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s sixth-place score was led by Reagan Skovgard’s 111.

West Marshall and two individuals advance

DIKE — The North Iowa Cedar League’s West Division will have its fair share of representation at the Class 2A Region 3 girls’ golf final next week.

West Marshall senior Brooke Snider tied for sixth place and led her Trojans to the third and final qualifying spot after Monday’s first-round regional meet at Fox Ridge Golf Course.

Snider shot a 94 to pace West Marshall, which totaled 395 to distance itself from NICL West counterpart East Marshall (417) for third place. That earned the Trojans another round as a team thanks to meet host Dike-New Hartford finishing in one of the top two spots. The Wolverines totaled 387 to take a distant second to New Hampton (341), which had three of the best four scores of the day.

While East Marshall didn’t advance as a team, senior Tylyn Eicher advanced individually after sharing that sixth-best score with Snider. South Hardin junior Jaelyn Allen also qualified for next Monday’s regional finals, finishing with a 95 for eighth place and the last individual spot.

Behind Snider’s 94, Jenna Kifer contributed a 98 and both Whitney Edler and Karisa Blocker carded 100. East Marshall’s team score came from Eicher’s 94, a 103 from Jazzy Leavy, Abigail Beal’s 106 and Emma Wildman’s 114.

Ashley Heubner was the next-best scorer for South Hardin with her 107. Sybil Below (117) and Chloe Edgerton (121) rounded out the Tigers’ total.

Dike-New Hartford’s Morgan Weber earned medalist honors on her home course, shooting a 2-over-par 72. A trio of New Hampton golfers followed: Allison Nuss at 77, Morgan Nuss with an 81 and Emma Ewert’s 82.
