Under Tonya Gaffney’s watch

Thank you for the front-page expose dated 3/26/24 highlighting community censors support for an accomplished, proven, censoring library board president, Tonya Gaffney. Under her watch, a patron was labeled “our problem patron,” a bully, a harasser, a mayor, a 75-year-old, and a resident of an unincorporated “town.” Under her watch, public discourse on agenda items at the time they are considered, has been eliminated. Now, agenda items can only be commented on for 180 seconds at the top of the meeting without having a clue as to what will be said by board members when the ...

Rockford knife attack

After the vicious and brutal knife attacks that killed several victims in Rockford, Illinois, I now expect the Marshalltown Public Library Board to ban the subscription of all culinary magazines.

Illegal immigration and Iowa bill

One of the first requirements of government at any level is the protection of its citizens. When it comes to the illegal invasion happening at both of our borders, both political parties have failed us for decades. As it has gone on, too many of those breaking in are opportunists, criminals and terrorists. They are not here to become “good citizens” but for what they can get: free education, health care, legal representation, housing and food. Appreciation for community support

The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #46, Marshalltown thanks the businesses, merchants and individuals who provided prizes and gift certificates to share with attendees at the annual St. Patrick’s card party. Many of these businesses have contributed in past years and we continue to appreciate their contributions to our efforts. We also appreciate the patrons who attend this annual event. This auxiliary fundraiser supports veteran projects and programs we ...

The right to be

Nearly 40 % of our nation’s population now check the “None” square when asked what religion they prefer, including myself. This acknowledgement gives no one else the right to assume that we “none’s” have any less morals or standards than those who check a certain religion, especially now while hypocrisy runs rampant amongst believers. The current movement of conservative-dominated governments to misinterpret the constitutional right of Freedom of Religion to mean that religions have the right to impose their beliefs on others is totally irrational. For example, why anyone ...

Our cooperative is strong!

Dear friends of the Village Coop of Marshalltown, The Des Moines Register recently published an article regarding the failure of a number of cooperative projects in Iowa. This article referred to a competitor of ours based in Pella that is associated with cooperatives all over the state of Iowa, and elsewhere. We at the Village Coop of Marshalltown are reaching out to future Coop members to ease any concerns you may have about the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown. It has been nearly 14 years since the opening of the Village Cooperative of Marshalltown. Our finances are in very ...
