Sorority discusses Main Street flowers

Sigma Master Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi met for lunch on June 8 with eight members present, and two guests in the home of Jan Keller. Health reports were given by many with two attending after hip surgery.

Roll call was taken with the question asked: “What would you like to do on a ‘day out’ in July and August?”

Minutes of the April meetings were read by Alice Nicholson, and Barb Noid gave the treasurer’s report after the 60th anniversary gift for Caralee Hutchens was paid.

Budget concern was expressed by Hutchens and a motion was made by Nicholson, seconded by Keller to increase the dues to $20 as all members at large will not be paying according to international bylaws. Also, according to the bylaws, Elizabeth Wood will be transferring to member at large due to non attendance. Discussion followed with all in favor.

Service projects were discussed with having received no information regarding the “flowers on Main Street.” Guiding Star Marshalltown was questioned as to who would be of benefit for donation and information was shared. Dorothy Perry made a motion to send $75, seconded by Bonnie Speas, with all in favor as it will enhance the John Agnew Memorial.

The State Fair Beta Sigma Phi Convention will be held June 11, 12 and 13 at West Des Moines Marriott. With no meeting in May, no one plans to attend.

A special memorial for departed members was given by President Diane Hobson including: Shirley Bowman, Anne Fiscus, Jeanne Bein, Avonelle Ebersole, Phyllis Arends, Pat Pose, June Scheffert, Elna Splittgerber, Doris Swensen, Erma Fields, Joan Kopsa and Marjorie McFadden. They have been part of the sorority family since 1967. Prayer was said as all bowed in silence as the meeting ended.

Dessert was served by hostess Keller as Jackie Fiscus assisted with the finger jello, raspberry tea and candy. While enjoying fellowship, it was decided to meet at 4 p.m. on July 13 and go to the Haverhill Social Club for the evening.
