VFW Auxiliary Post 839 holds busy meeting

The August 2021 general membership meeting of the VFW Auxiliary Post 839 met at the post home at 6:46 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Betty Needs, president, led opening ceremonies according to ritual. Six members answered roll call and a guest/potential new member, Pat McLain was present. The opening prayer was given by Linda Fuller in the absence of Chaplain Liz Polkiewicz. There were no birthdays and one person was mentioned on the sick call list, a card has been sent.

Secretary Deb Miller read the August minutes, Carol Ewalt motioned to accept the minutes as read, Fuller seconded, minutes were approved as read.

The VFW Auxiliary, Department of Iowa General Orders #4 by Department President Jeanette Henry was then read. Communications was passed around for all member’s review.

Donna Mitchem, treasurer gave the treasurer’s report. The treasurer’s report was accepted as given, subject to audit. There were no bills presented for payment.

Two committee reports were given by Marian Hyde and Fuller. Hyde reported on the Mole Skins provided for the 87 care packages sent to the adopted unit 3654 SMC – Army National Guard Unit from Knoxville, IA which has been deployed. Fuller reported that PAWS for Veterans Therapy Bill, HE 1448, has passed the House and Senate and has been sent to the president’s desk for his signature. Bill S.1031 Assess VA Benefit Disparities will require a study on disparities associated with race and ethnicity with respect to certain benefits administered by the VA. Members sending letters, emails, faxes and calls have an impact on these and future bills impacting the military and veterans. Fuller also noted that these letters can be found on the VFW.org website and encouraged everyone to keep sending those letters.

Old business included the announcement by Miller that the Buddy Poppies and Meat Sale has been postponed. The National Home Prayer was led by Fuller and recited by all in attendance.

New Business included the announcement by Fuller that a Culver’s Tip Night has been scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Ewalt and Hyde signed up for the 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. shift, Mitchem for the 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. shift. Needs and Fuller will work both shifts.

A bake sale has been scheduled for Oct. 9. This will be held at Marshalltown’s National Guard Armory during the American Legion Auxiliary’s Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Theresa Shepherd is scheduled to work from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Tammy Tuttle and Deloris Clayton from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Mitchem and Hyde from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Discussion was held on upcoming membership renewals. More details to be provided in the October meeting.

The closing prayer was recited by Fuller. The closing Ceremonies were conducted according to the ritual, and the meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. Officers Needs, Fuller, Miller and Mitchem should report at 5:30 p.m.
