Gladbrook Auxiliary holds April meeting

GLADBROOK — Spring has arrived to Iowa with warmer temps, robins, flowers poking through and farmers discing to seed waterways. Jeanne welcomed 12 members to the Gladbrook Auxiliary meeting at 1:30 p.m. on April 10 with the pledge to the flag and prayer by Sue Koster.

The March Veteran’s Day potluck minutes were read with everyone enjoying the special program by the Iowa Veterans Home commandant. A thank you was read from the IVH for the 31 balls of materials for their rug looms.

It was reported that the kitchen refrigerator was not cooling properly.

Trudi gave the treasurer’s report. Tama County Government Day was postponed from April 12 as only two schools were able to attend and the county officials wished to change the date till April 26 so better to prepare for it. Guests, schools, program and volunteers were notified as to the change.

Jeanne reported that Juniors are tentatively scheduled to distribute poppies after school on May 10 with Trudi serving lunch. Seniors will distribute at Caseys and Hometown Food Market on May 12; 9 a.m. from Peace Church. She also updated on Legion/Auxiliary Corn Carnival activities with the Beef and Pork Producers both grilling starting at 3 p.m. each day. Peace Church and Legion/Auxiliary will still be serving the Sunday Omelet breakfast on June 18 at Peace United Church of Christ.

The Gladbrook Legion/Auxiliary will be serving a turkey/trimmings and ham dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 30 with carryouts and deliveries to surrounding communities. People can also sit down and eat in comfort in the Memorial Building too. Check Facebook and flyers for details as this will be a fundraiser for the Legion/Auxiliary to help replace Corn Carnival proceeds.

Members will be doing a bit of extra annual cleaning in the Memorial building with the Auxiliary working 2-hour shifts 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on April 17 and maybe April 18. The Legion will be cleaning the floors later this month.

‘Young Women’ sponsored Gladbrook Garage Sales are being planned for June 3. A motion was made by Joyce Swangel, seconded by Koster to have an Auxiliary Family Garage sale in the Memorial Building and also serve 7 a.m. coffee/cinnamon rolls along with lunch of a hot sandwich selection, chips and bars. Sale items may be donated and donations for bars needed.

Koster provided the program as she helped the group welcome spring with a sing-along of several piano selections. We all could remember “that Doggie in the window.”

The next meeting will be the Mother’s Day Tea at 1:30 p.m. on May 8 with a Memorial Service for those lost, a Junior to Senior graduation, welcome new members and give out membership awards. Come welcome Department President Jayne Soppe to Gladbrook.

The meeting was adjourned with a prayer for Peace by Chaplain Swangel and the members joining hands as we all sang “God bless America.”

A dessert lunch was served by Dinny Nielsen and Arlene Horstmann.
