American Legion hosts April meeting

The ALA April 13 meeting was opened by Deb Miller, president, at the American Legion Post 46 in the lower level. Opening Prayer was given by Dorothy Hellberg, chaplain. Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Constitution were recited. Thirteen members answered roll call.Jessica Bolen was introduced as a new member. Two April birthdays were recognized. Officers to remain one more year

Harry C. Harter Post Commander Rob Shepherd presided over 14 members in attendance. After first and second call elections, it looks as if Shepherd and most of the current officers will remain for another year in office. Rick Johnson, assistant quartermaster, headed nominations during the session. Normal rituals were held. Bob Miller presented the combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard report on activities, noting participation in nine military funerals during March. P.E.O. Chapter LT met April 5

P.E.O. Chapter LT had a Zoom meeting April 5 with 17 members participating and Rhonda Miller conducting her first meeting as president. Gina Ruddick reported on the Iowa Sarah Porter Beckwith Friendship Fund. Any Stahlin reported on the International Continuing Education Grant. Discussion was held related to fundraising ideas for the local MHS student scholarship and organization use. Amy Stahlin is in the process of planning the calendar book for 2021-22. The next Zoom meeting will be May 3.

How to improve Elks Park

The Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Department is looking for input for the Elks Park neighborhood on what amenities they would like to see improved or added at Elks Park, 516 N Third Street. A Community Engagement Meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday the park. Anyone interested in providing feedback or input on the park amenities and future improvements to be made this summer are welcome to attend. Marshalltown Modern Woodmen recognized for event

Members of Modern Woodmen of America Chapter 385 in Marshalltown were recently recognized for coordinating an exemplary Hometown Hero event. The group, led by activities coordinator Mary Blom, honored an 86-year-old woman who made hundreds of face masks for the community. In addition to honoring her with Modern Woodmen’s Hometown Hero award, the chapter invited her family members, past piano students and other guests to a virtual award presentation on Zoom. At the monthly Zoom meeting for PEO Chapter MJ on March 1, officers were installed for the 2021-22 year. They were President Rheba Yost, Vice President Charlene Martin, Recording Secretary Chris Melde, Corresponding Secretary Marki McKibben, Treasurer Andria Helgerson, Chalin Barb McBride, Guard Meredith Bell, State Convention Delegate Yost, State Convention Alternate Delegate Martin.
