LISCOMB — Liscomb Legion Auxiliary Unit 87 met at 1:30 p.m. at the Union Library on April 5. Five members present. President Sharon Hatch opened the meeting. Chaplain Dorothy Sorensen gave a devotional prayer. All recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Auxiliary Preamble, a moment of silence was observed for the MIA/POW and deceased veterans. The April 2023 general membership meeting of the VFW Auxiliary Post 839 met at the post home on April 18. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Liz Polkiewicz, followed by the opening ceremonies according to the ritual. There were nine members present, each of whom was officers. Eleven members of Chapter BB, P.E.O met April 17 at the Binford House. Julie Hitchins served as hostess with Jean Brennecke and Sue Cope serving as co-hostesses. Before the meeting, Mary Giese presented an informative program about the life of Jessie Binford. She was a daughter of Thaddeus and Angelica Binford, who built the historic Binford House in 1874. Jessie was a famous activist and social worker for 60 years in Chicago, intervening for children and women. In retirement she returned to Marshalltown, passing away when she was 90. The Ave Maria Study Club met in the St. Henry dining room at 1 p.m. on April 14 with 14 members and one guest, Bernice Diggins, attending. Hostesses were Thonia Chua and Marj Higgins. The program was arranged by Jean Miller and presented by her son, Fr. Dennis Miller, on his years as a priest. Fr. Miller grew up in Marshalltown and has now served 20 years as a priest in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. He credits the influence of Sr. Anne Fiala as sparking his desire to become a priest after she asked him to help teach religion at St. Mary. Fr. Miller told of the various parishes he served ...
