Police arrested a Marshalltown man for allegedly trying to strangle his wife in front of their two school age children.
Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said Samuel Montes-Dirzo, 31, grabbed his wife around the neck at the couple’s home early Sunday morning.
The couple’s 7-year-old and 4-year-old sons were sleeping in the bed with Montes-Dirzo and his wife at the time of the attack on the 200 block of North 13th Avenue, Hanken said.
Police charged Montes-Dirzo with domestic assault involving attempted strangulation, a Class D felony, and two counts of child endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors.
Local man charged in bar fight
A bar fight early Saturday morning ended with a local man facing aggravated assault charges after he allegedly broke another man’s nose.
Police charged Martin Jamell, 22, of Marshalltown, with aggravated assault, after EMTs transported him and another local man to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.
Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said Jamell turned himself in after being treated at the hospital.
Police noticed people standing in the alley near Center Street Station across from the police department just before the bar closed, Hanken said. When the officer investigated, she discovered the aftermath of the fight.
The victim, a 28-year-old local man, had to be transported to University of Iowa Hospitals for the broken nose and a laceration to his cheek.
Hanken said the victim will be charged once he is released from the hospital for his role in the fight.
