Local man arrested for burglary, assault

A man who allegedly slashed his girlfriend’s tires and later broke into her home and assaulted her has been arrested.

A warrant was issued for Jake Waterhouse, 18, after the alleged incident took place outside of the victim’s apartment.

According to police, the two were arguing the evening of July 29 when he grabbed a steak knife and slashed her tires and then left the scene. At 4:30 a.m. the next morning he returned and tried to break into the apartment while the victim called police, said Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department. Waterhouse eventually kicked in the door to the apartment an assaulted her and fled, Batterson said. Waterhouse was at large until he was arrested Monday.

He is charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony, simple domestic assault and fifth-degree criminal mischief. Waterhouse made an initial court appearance Tuesday where a no-contact order was issued with the victim. He is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

Man steals food, throws it at cars

A local man was arrested after he allegedly stole food from a convenience store and then threw it at cars.

Austin James Vermace, 33, was arrested Thursday after police were dispatched to Kwik Star, 2500 S. Center St., at about 7:45 p.m. Vermace had allegedly walked off with a muffin, a gallon of milk and some ice cream and later threw those items at some vehicles. According to a witness, Vermace also assaulted a kid and took off running in the mall parking lot.

Police said he appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic, so an ambulance was called.

He is charged with public intoxication and fifth-degree theft.

Man assaults woman holding child

A local man faces a serious domestic assault charge after allegedly assaulting his wife.

Marcos Perez, 23, apparently attacked his wife on Aug. 19 when the two got into an argument. She had come home to find she was locked out of the house and was waiting for him in a vehicle outside the home on North 10th Avenue. When her spouse returned they got into an argument in which he tried to force her out of the car. According to the police report he was attempting to pull her out of the car while she was holding her son. The victim had scratch marks on her arm; the child was uninjured.

Perez is charged with serious domestic assault and child endangerment without injury.

The report was made available by the Marshalltown Police Department on Tuesday.

Man spits, kicks police officer at ER

A local man who was yelling and screaming outside of a Main Street bar Sunday night was tasered and sent to the local emergency room.

According to a police report, James Garret Roberts, 33, was near the Blue Note Lounge when he failed to comply with police officers responding to the disturbance.

Roberts allegedly began to flee on foot when he was tased by officers, cuffed and taken to the emergency room at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. There, he allegedly became combative and spit and kicked at a police officer.

He is charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and public intoxication.

Man punched girlfriend in the face

A woman was allegedly punched in the face by her boyfriend while talking to a friend outside her home Friday.

Aundre DeWayne Allen, 37, allegedly assaulted the woman on the 700 block of Washington Street and then fled.

The victim later came to the police station to report the incident.

Allen was later arrested when he was located walking in town and charged with domestic assault.

The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 13. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety.

Josh Zach Tovar, address unknown, made an initial appearance through counsel, Barry Kaplan, on two counts of a violation of a no-contact order charge. He pleaded not guilty to both counts and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 1. Tovar was released on his own recognizance. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

Heather Marie Castell, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a serious domestic assault. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 23. The court ordered that if she owned or possessed any firearms or ammunition she is to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours and make arrangements to surrender them. Castell was released on her own recognizance. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

On Monday, Robert Silver, 624 E. South St., reported the theft of three gold necklaces, miscellaneous earrings and rings from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $500.

On Monday, Dennis Buchanan, of Gilman, reported the theft of a 6 foot by 12 foot trailer with a fold up screen ramp from the parking lot at Midwest Machine, 308 S. Third Ave. Estimated value of loss was $1,600.

On Thursday, Matthew Vincent Tyda, 109 S. 16th St., reported the theft of a watch with diamond chips and a bracelet from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $305.

On Aug. 28, Bill Casady, 3110 S. Sixth St., reported the theft of a 200 foot 220 volt extension cord and a 125 foot 220 extension cord from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $2,000.
