Fire damages back porch

A fire damaged the back porch of a local house Friday.

Scott Johnson, acting fire chief, said at about 10 a.m. on 533 N. Second St., a fire started on the back porch.

The residents and pet safely exited the house after being alerted by a smoke detector.

The back door was forced open and the fire took about 10 minutes to be extinguished, Johnson said.

No one was injured in the fire and the cause is still under investigation. The Marshalltown Fire Department was assisted by the paramedics and the Marshalltown Police Department.

Welcoming George home is his big sister Margot. Grandparents are Tom and Cindy Mack, of Marshalltown, and Don and Rosemary Gruber, of St. Paul, Minn.

Samantha Baccam and Austin Halsted, of Marshalltown, are the parents of a daughter, Arabella Mailin Halsted, born at 11:50 a.m. on June 3 at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Welcoming Arabella home are big brothers Peyson and Creighton Halsted. Grandparents are Penney and Glen Stewart, Brian and Leng Baccam and Wes and Sally Halsted.

Ashley and Ted Lewis, of Marshalltown, are the parents of a daughter, Naomi Elizabeth Lewis, born at 9:30 a.m. on May 22 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 20 inches in length. Welcoming Naomi home is big brother Theo. Grandparents are Janan and Andy Clark, of Oskaloosa, and Diane and David Lewis, of Marshalltown.

Darvell L. Gamblin, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set at 1 p.m. on June 25. Gamblin was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered the results of a substance abuse evaluation to be submitted within 60 days of today’s date.

James Dennis Scott, 408 Melody Lane Apt. #4, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. He pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning July 3 and continuing monthly until the debt is paid in full.

She pleaded guilty to both charges and the fines are $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, each. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning July 3 and continuing monthly until the debt is paid in full.

Craig Bresnahan, of Newton, made an initial appearance on a warrant charging him with failure to appear for an arraignment on a theft-fourth degree charge. He pleaded guilty to the theft-fourth degree and the fine is $315 with a $110.25 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $410.25. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning July 3 and continuing until the debt is paid in full.

Renea Lorraine Morrison, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a failure to obey a traffic control device charge and a driving under suspension charge. She pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. on July 22 in Magistrate Court.

Dale Allen Blackcloud, of Tama, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge and a failure to secure a child charge. He pleaded guilty to both charges. On the driving under suspension charge the fine is $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. The fine on the failure to secure a child charge is $100 with a $35 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $195. All payments are due within 30 days of today’s date.

Shelene Kate Balderas, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge and two seat belt violation charges. She pleaded guilty to all charges. On the driving under suspension charge the fine is $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. The fines on the two seat belt violations are $50 each with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50 per charge. All payments are due within 30 days of today’s date.
