No scripts. No experience required. Not a problem. The annual “Instant Comedy — Just Add Spam” improvisation comedy show returns to the Orpheum Theater Center Black Box Theater, with a workshop running Dec. 27, 28 and 29 at 6:30 p.m. each night, with performances on Dec. 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m.
Those interested in participating can attend as many of the workshops as he/she would like, to get a feel for this type of comedy. Attending the workshops does not obligate you to participate in the public performances.
“Veteran improv actors will be there, plus anyone who wants to experience it is welcome to show up,” said director Chad Weir.
About 10-20 performers can be on the stage at any one time, and the style is modeled after the television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The workshops are free and open to the public to watch; the performances require purchasing tickets, at a cost of $12.50 per person. Folks of all ages may participate in the workshops, while it is preferred to have those high school age and older involved in the performances.
Weir said having the ability to do improvisation comedy transcends the stage.
“Improv can teach you to become a better person. You really have to have a good amount of give and take to do it,” he said. “There’s a big stress on success in your personal and professional lives, so this teaches you how to ‘fail well’ and be okay with trying things that are new. We lack that in society.”
