Grinnell Regional Medical Center wins award

Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s patient safety award winning submission was on reducing obstetrical adverse effects through implementation of the 39-week rule policy. Education was an important step in their journey toward compliance and a culture change at GRMC.

Patient education was a key factor in the implementation of this new policy. Physicians and nursing staff were all trained in the steps of the new policy as well as substantial evidence demonstrating 39-weeks as the ideal threshold for full gestation.

GRMC was an early adopter of the 39-week policy for elective deliveries starting in 2008. In nearly seven years since the initiative started at GRMC, the percentage of newborns in need of transfer to a neonatal intensive care unit dropped dramatically. The number of babies who were transferred to a NICU dropped to three babies in 2013, from a high of 12 in 2008. The number of transfers has been consistently two to three babies a year since this policy was put in practice.
