Marshalltown to see two major road projects this summer

T-R PHOTO BY LOGAN METZGER — Two projects are scheduled to be done this summer, a large job on Center street and a micro-surfacing elsewhere in Marshalltown. The Center Street job is through the DOT and the micro-surfacing is through the Marshalltown Public Works.

With summer starting and good weather coming around, construction of all types is popping up in Marshalltown. Two major road projects are in the works.

Micro-surfacing

The first of these two projects is already underway and will conclude in mid-June, weather permitting. This project is a micro-surfacing of the road from Third Street and Center Street to Sixth Street and Iowa Avenue. The project is done under traffic so no detours are available or necessary, Marshalltown Public Works Director Justin Nickel said.

“Micro-surfacing is a road maintenance tool that involves laying a mixture of dense-graded aggregate, asphalt emulsion, water, polymer additive and mineral fillers to correct or prevent certain deficiencies in pavement conditions,” according to “30 Years of Micro-surfacing: A Review” from Texas State University.

The Marshalltown Public Works office is handling the project.

Center Street

The second and larger of the two projects was started Monday and is scheduled to finish in 90 work days. This will put the end date at Oct. 7, weather permitting, said Dustin Skogerboe, resident construction engineer for the Marshall County Department of Transportation.

This project starts on Highway 14/Center Street by Marshalltown Community College to Anson Street to Third Avenue and then from Third Avenue up to the river. At least one lane will be open at all times allowing vehicles to pass through, therefore no detours are necessary or available.

“There will be headaches and traffic might be constricted in some areas, but we will continue on and get done as soon as we can,” Skogerboe said.

This project consists of sawing, cutting and patching up the road, resurfacing, and simple patching of the road. The project also includes replacements of sidewalk ramps along the road, median work and some landscaping.

The Marshall County DOT is handling the project.
