Simmons guilty of 3rd degree sexual abuse

Simmons

Jamaine Simmons of Marshalltown was found guilty by a Marshall County jury of third-degree sexual abuse on Thursday. It is a class C felony and carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Marshall County Attorney Jennifer Miller said prosecutors Sarah Tupper and Kate Austin tried the case on behalf of the state. She thanked the Marshalltown Police Department for their investigation of this case.

“I am extremely proud of the team effort exhibited by members of my office and the other law enforcement agencies involved in bringing Jamaine Simmons to justice,” Miller said.

This was the first jury trial to take place in Marshall County since the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

Miller said she was thankful for the jurors who demonstrated a remarkable commitment to their oath in reaching the verdict.

“I am truly grateful for their dedication to seeking the truth — particularly in light of the current circumstances due to COVID-19,” she said.

Simmons is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
