Drug trafficker with Marshalltown ties sentenced to prison

DES MOINES — An Ames man who led police officers on two high speed chases in Marshalltown in 2020 has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, authorities in Polk and Marshall counties repeatedly found 53-year-old Lonnie Hill in possession of narcotics (including meth, heroin and marijuana), firearms and large amounts of cash between May and July 2020. During one of the high-speed chases in Marshalltown, Hill crashed into an occupied vehicle.

A joint investigation between the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshalltown Police Department, the Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force revealed that Hill, who had previously been convicted of felony drug trafficking and was on parole at the time of the incidents, was trafficking methamphetamine and other drugs in the Marshalltown area.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa prosecuted the case. Hill will be subject to five years of supervised release after the conclusion of his prison term.
