Walker submits resignation from city council

Third Ward Marshalltown City Councilman Dex Walker has submitted his letter of resignation after about a year and a half in office, citing a new professional opportunity that will require a move to the Des Moines area as the reason for his decision.

Walker was elected in November of 2021 and replaced Mike Gowdy, who retired after two terms. His four-year term runs until the end of 2025.

Walker, a Marshalltown native, reflected on his tenure and the future of the community in an email to the T-R.

“I’ve greatly enjoyed my time on the City Council and have a deep respect for the dedicated teams of professionals that keep our community the safe and welcoming home that it is. Marshalltown’s future remains bright because of the many wonderful people and organizations that are committed to its collective success,” he said. “I consider being from Marshalltown a privilege, and I have nothing but gratitude for all the great memories our hometown has provided my family.”

According to Mayor Joel Greer, the most likely course of action is that the council will accept applications and ultimately appoint a replacement by August or September to serve out the remainder of Walker’s term or until the general election in November. If enough signatures are presented, a special election could also be called for the seat.

According to the ward map from the most recent city election, the Third Ward covers the southwest quadrant of Marshalltown with its northern border running from Lincoln Way to West Nevada Street and small sections of East Boone and East Linn streets and its eastern border running along South Third Avenue and then South Center Street.

Starting at $4.38/week.
